While attending the New York School for Medical and Dental Assistants, a serious eye disease left Lourdes Garcia Colon in terrible pain, unable to drive a ar or read a book. After receiving cornea transplants in November 2007 and April 2008, Lourdes can now enjoy what she loves most, including watching her son Joshua play baseball. She is very grateful for her donor’s gift and appreciates the endless support from her husband William and parents Awilda and Carlos. |

In 1976, Elaine Gray was diagnosed with an eye disease that, untreated, can lead to blindness. In 1996, she received a cornea transplant with tissue provided by the Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration in New York. After a cornea transplant in her other eye, Elaine passed her driving test, a major goal when her sight was impaired. She said that no day passes without her thinking about her donors and their families. |

Recipients of Donated Organs
Japanese heart recipient Glenn M. Matsuki is actively involved in the organ donation community and credits his donor’s gift of life for allowing him to help other donor families and transplant recipients. The parents of Jason Zhao, a Chinese heart recipient, are eternally grateful to the donor’s family for giving their son a second chance to live. Vietnamese kidney recipient Helen Tran was born with Vater’s syndrome, a disease that caused abnormalities to many of her internal organs. After her transplant, she finished college and views her successes as a tribute to her donor. Sun chin, a Korean liver recipient, suffered from liver sclerosis for 10 years before it developed into liver cancer. The generosity of her donor helps her live on with determination and hope.
